And then we had Sleepover

Wednesday, 16 June, 2004

I've just come back from Sleepover. How did it go? It went great! I only wish there had been more time! Tuesday proceeded very smoothly, considering the number of things I had to get done: printing my talk (plus aids) and outlines; photocopying, collating and folding outlines; go to the bank to get change, etc. Thanks be to God! I know this sounds very minor but I was really apprehensive about it given the amount of time I had to do everything. Ben's computer has died which means I can't print anything (my laptop does not have a parallel port) so I had to print everything off the Chaplaincy computer which has an idiosyncratic Canon laser which only accepts one sheet of paper at a time. In addition, the photocopier, on which we do everything for ECU and which is located downstairs near Clubs &Societies, is an old temperamental beast that does not do automatic double-siding and I was making 15 20-page A5 booklets. I missed lunch but I was on time to pick up Little Rach and drive down to Jamberoo in Amanda's car (Amanda lent me her car because she was going away to senior staff conference). We were there stacks earlier than planned—no doubt owing to my worrying. I was able to use the time to draw some visual aids for my talk and get everything organised before people arrived. We went and said hi to the very friendly neighbours to let them know we were there and not to be concerned about the hordes of girls that would be showing up (not really). The husband offered to give us some wood to light a fire. At first I thought we wouldn't bother but he kept mentioning it and Rach was heaps keen on the idea so later in the afternoon she went and took up his offer. (Good thing Naomi knew how to light a fire; I have absolutely no idea.) In total we got 15 girls for the study which was exactly the number I was hoping for. The study went quite well, though I felt bad about having to hurry people along and the fact that we went overtime by about one and a half hours. People didn't see to mind and Amanda (who had come down for the afternoon to watch and give me feedback) said that it was probably a good thing. Amanda had to go but two of the other girls, who were originally only going to come down for the study, decided to stay for dinner (chicken burgers!). Sally gave her testimony, we asked her questions and then we prayed for her. I thought it was great that people had a chance to get to know her (but then the whole sleepover thing was great for people to get to know each other!) After dinner Naomi took us through some get-to-know-you games which she was supposed to do before the study but they all arrived late so we couldn't. She got us all to write acrostic poems using the letters of our names. We all had to stand up and read them to each other wearing my black beret, which, surprisingly, many did not know how to wear. Then she got us to write the names of famous people on pieces of paper which we then used for a game Taboo-style; we divided into two teams, one person would draw names out of the box and try to describe them in as many words as she liked to the other team without using the person's name. The other team had to guess who it was. That team got points depending on how many they could get through in one minute. Then we swapped so that someone on the other team tried to make us guess. There were a lot of names that kept coming up—Harry Potter, John Howard, Bugs Bunny, etc. We must all be thinking on the same wavelength. After a while of doing that, Naomi collected back the ones we had already done and chucked out the leftovers. Using the ones we had already done, we had to do the same thing with the extra limitation that we could only use one word to describe the person while the other team guessed. After a few rounds of doing that, Naomi collected back the ones we had already done, chucked out the leftovers and got us to do the same thing as we'd done before with the extra limitation that we couldn't say anything; we could only act it out. The other team still had to guess. Julie and I couldn't stop laughing for long enough to even take a shot. We had Neapolitan ice cream and fruit for dessert. (Rae and Laura were looking after the food and they were so awesome; I was so grateful about the fact that they took care of it all and I didn't even have to think about that aspect of sleepover! Delegation is the way to go! Each girl paid $10 which basically covered things.) I played a game of Upwords with Hannah and then Julie taught us to make these really cool flowers out of pipecleaners, beads and feathers. We made them for some of the girls who couldn't come but we didn't get around to finishing the tags and chocolates that were supposed to be attached to them. At 11:30 (which was really far too late!) we all got changed into our pyjamas and started watching Ben's favourite movie—Rear Window. I was surprised that they picked that one out of the available selection. I think they really enjoyed it too. We finally got to bed at about 1:30 in the morning, scattered over different rooms in the house. Everyone got up at around 8 and had pancakes with honey, jam, lemon or slices of granny smith apples. Rae was to give her testimony but, for various reasons, she wasn't up to it so I mobilised everyone to help clean up instead. Then we got together to pray briefly that God would keep us safe on our travels. We got out of there at about 9:45 am. I dropped off the camera to Ben who is going on a road trip with Tho and Jono for six days. Then I dropped off Karen at her house. Sally was going to see this guy at Wombarra but that wasn't until 1 so she and I went and got a drink, sat by the beach near Coledale (?) and chatted. I took her where she needed to be and then went home. All in all, Sleepover was great! Maybe I'll organise another one next semester ...
