It may just be a gross generalisation, but it seems to me that single people and non-married people are far more interested in celebrating Valentine's Day than married people. Or maybe I have just talked to too many couples lately who have told me, “I think Valentine's Day is stupid,” and that they prefer to give flowers or take their spouse out to dinner when it's not some greeting card holiday.
Last year some people at my church organised a Valentine's Day dinner for the singles. I know this sounds really stupid but I felt left out.

Valentine’s day is, primarily, a valid occasion on which to eat chocolate no matter what your marital state, convictions or dietary compulsions. Keep this in mind and it will all fall into perspective
People get the point wrong - that is the problem with it. They assume that it is The Day to celebrate Romance. As a result, romance is not celebrated on other days, and people who do not celebrate romance on The Day are castigated - either by their Significant Other, or by insignificant others who think other people are being hard done by.
I had a firm philosophy of v-day in mind when I started this, but can’t remember. Anyway, if romance is the focus of valentine’s day, then that focus is misplaced and the whole holiday becomes twisted, causing misery, disillusionment and discontent.
If the focus is kept on chocolate and love-hearts and candy and lacy cards, then people will remember that it is primarily an excuse to have fun and won’t hold singles parties to comfort the people who are free to enjoy the true meaning of valentines day by excluding the people who don’t seem to enjoy it so much anyway.
I think.
