Carols

Friday, 12 December, 2003

Sorry I haven't written much lately. I'm still rundown from National Training Event and things have been quite busy at work. I still haven't caught up on all my blog reading from the past two weeks. Our next big preoccupation is UniCarols which is tomorrow evening. We were having it on the Vice-Chancellor's lawn at Uni up until one week ago when the Uni decided that we couldn't have it on the Vice-Chancellor's lawn because we might ruin it for graduations. So now we're having it on the McKinnon Building lawn. This morning I rehearsed with the band at Planet Bob. The band, funnily enough, is made up of Bens: Ben Pakula (Pakman), Ben Caldwell (Shaggy) and, of course, my Ben (Beilz). Simon, unfortunately, has something else on, otherwise it would be the best band in the world (IMHO). We are doing “Silent Night” in swing and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” in ultra-morbid/death style. Sounds fun, doesn't it! Please pray it doesn't rain.

Is there any way I can get an mp3 of the songs from when you do them? I would love to hear the different styles that you are using.

Sorry Mike, I meant to record us but in the rush of getting stuff sorted, I forgot to bring the tape recorder :(.

The arrangement we used for &#8220’Silent Night” is by Fred Hersch and it appears in the December 1995 issue of Keyboard (the Solo Piano column): “Cool sounds for a ‘Silent Night’”. We made up “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” ourselves because our drummer is really into heavy metal.
