Falling leaves a sycamore

Thursday, 05 October, 2006

The funeral is tomorrow and Ben is writing an eulogy. I thought what he wrote on his blog was good enough (it certainly made me cry) but I guess it's different when it's your grandmother's funeral and you have to say something in front of all the guests. Cathy has asked us to do “God is Good” and “Danny Boy” at the very end. What was that trick they talked about on Australian Idol—the one that stops you from crying when you sing?

Tonight, however, Ben and I went over to the Wesley Institute for their performance night. I have been quite spoilt lately; so much live music and a lot of it has been excellent. Highlights tonight were: “Autumn Leaves” by a jazz trio of piano, bass and drums, an original song by Jonny Robinson (who is an awesome drummer) and, of course, Lizz singing “Moonlight in Vermont” in memory of her grandma. She looked like a 1940's starlet and she sang ever so sweetly. Grandma would have been so proud ...

I don’t know what the trick is about not crying at funerals. But I know that I’ve sung at 3 funerals and nobody cares that you aren’t perfect. That’s one very small positive about that sort of “gig”. smile

I can only hope I made her proud that night.  I was definitely thinking of her.  She was always so proud of all of our musicality.
