Today I slept in for a very long time, woke up and panicked about something which I had promised to do for work but hadn't done, got it done and called Simon at MM about it, wrote Christmas cards, wrapped parcels, thought briefly about applying for all my jobs before going to this Centrelink interview (and then thought, “Nah,”), went to check the mailbox (and then my Rockport sandals, which my mother had owned for a couple of years before giving them to me and which I had subsequently run into the ground because they were so comfortable and so nice that I practically wore out the soles and pretty much the ankle straps too—my favourite Rockport sandals finally broke) so I had to go back upstairs and I rummaged through my closet to find this old pair of sandals which I had barely worn (because they were sort of green-ish in colour) and then Ben and I walked to Leichhardt.
On the way my sandals felt a bit funny and then I noticed that bits of the rubber of the sole were falling off. I hadn't thought that they were that old but I guess they were!!
I had thought that this Centrelink interview was the Job Network one but it wasn't; it was a follow-up one from the one at Haymarket because they needed to get me to sign a few things and arrange a few things that I hadn't been able to do at Haymarket because of the blackout. Most of the interview involved the lady (who was Indian), tapping away at her computer while I just sat there and tried not to fidget. She gave me the work agreement and arranged an interview with a Job Network member for Tuesday 3rd January.
“I start work then,” I said. “I won't need to see a Job Network member.”
She said that she had to make the appointment anyway to jump through Centrelink's hoops and that I should ring up and cancel it on the day and explain why. And then it was over and I went off to the Italian Forum to meet Ben (who had been posting parcels and buying wrapping paper on my behalf and who had worked out what I was giving him for our anniversary because he was thinking of getting me the same thing [it's The Muppet Show: Season 1 on DVD]). I had been trying to think of nice things for us to do together this week and one of the things I had come up with was getting gelato in Leichhardt. So we went to Tuttigusti Gelateria in the Italian Forum and ate our three scoops (me: coconut, cookies & cream and Ferroro Rocher) and then after that wandered around some of the shops before going home (while big chunks of my sandals fell off onto the pavement).
Our church Bible study group came over for dinner and we ordered take-away Thai and made comments about 80's music while Live Aid and this 80's hits DVD played in the background. Everyone was pretty tired, though, so they went home fairly early, leaving lots of leftovers in our fridge and a 4L tub of Peters vanilla ice cream.
