Before I said we were thinking of moving; now we've decided that we're going to do it if we can. We started half-heartedly looking for places—I searched RealEstate.com which came up with some interesting results for the area we were interested in (Sydney's inner west). And Ben asked at Moore College's property office. They told him about a three bedroom unit in Stanmore which is $280/week. It's owned by MAC and it's part of a complex of other units. Yesterday we went and had a look.
I was astonished at how ridiculously close it is to church. There are two buildings on the grounds and one of them used to be a hospital. It has now been converted into flats and lecture rooms for MAC. The other building is a 100-year-old house where the nurses used to live—called Horaceville (probably named after the builder). The house has been divided into roughly three units and the one we were inspecting was on the top floor. All the rooms have ridiculously high ceilings (and lights that hang down lower so you can actually change the lightbulbs). Some of them have interesting decorations on them. Two of the rooms have fireplaces that no longer work and massive windows that go down to the floor—you lift them up and step through to go out onto the balcony (though the guy who was showing us around told us to stay away from one part of the balcony because it would probably collapse soon). The main room faces north and the whole place gets plenty of sun. The windows don't have screens but perhaps we could make something up and anyway the locals say they don't get many mosquitoes.
I've kind of fallen in love with the place—probably because it represents a way out of this mess I'm currently in. It's close to church, close to college, it's big, sunny and airy, we can have people over and it won't feel crowded ... I hope we get it. It will be the most interesting place I've ever lived in.
There's someone else who enquired about it before we did and, until that person rejects it, we won't know whether it's ours. So we must trust in God and try not to get too down or too impatient, and even if he closes this door of opportunity, we have to trust that he will either open another one or give us some way to keep going.
