How many Centrelink officers does it take to make a payment?

Thursday, 15 December, 2005

Not sure why I'm chronicling this any more. Probably for your amusement and maybe my future amusement.

Yesterday I noticed that $19.75 had gone into our bank account from Centrelink. “Hmm,” thinks I, “that payment was awfully small. I should ring about it. If they're only going to pay me $20 a fortnight, I should really go off Newstart and save myself the hassle.” I dreaded ringing up about it. No matter how nice the customer call centre person is on the other end of the line, ringing them always seems to mean that I have to do something else or fill in another form.

But this morning I rang and spoke to a very nice but verbose man who told me that the $19.75 was for one day (Friday 25th November) and had I actually filled in a Lodgement Form for the period covering 26th November-9th December? I told him I had but I hadn't filled one in for the 25th November (because I didn't know I had to!). He said that they hadn't processed it. He said he could notify the office who would check it and do a callback but it might be best if I went down to my local Centrelink office and chased it up with them—filled in any forms that might need filling in, get it straightened out in person. Privately I didn't think that going to the office ever straightened things out in person but anyway, I'll see if I can get down there today.
