In the tradition of Jo March

Sunday, 04 September, 2005

It is spring and I said I'd cut my hair. However, every time I talk about it, most people I know (after expressing their shock) urge me to sell it. Then I ask, “How?” but then they get vague on the details and it all starts to sound like an urban myth. I don't think that there's much of a market for selling you hair in Australia (just try Googling it) but I thought I would see if there was any truth to the rumour. So yesterday I rang two hairdressers in the Newtown/Camperdown area and asked them. They both replied, “Ask a wigmaker,” and one of them said that there wasn't much of a demand for it in Australia since all the hair they use to make wigs gets imported from overseas since it's probably cheaper that way. She didn't sound particularly optimistic so I'm not getting my hopes up. Anyway, I am not that committed to selling my hair—I'd much rather cut it off and be done with it. So my plan is to go when my exams for this term are over. I was thinking of getting it done like this. What do you think?

As an alternative you might consider Locks of Love ( http://www.locksoflove.org/ )

Thanks Bane, that’s a very good idea!

I think it’s a pretty hairstyle - very sweet and potentially bookish smile

I think it’ll look great!  It’s still going to be pretty long ! smile

Oh, and one more thing. I reckon you should plait it before you do the initial cut so that you can keep it.  Don’t sell it smile

I like the hairstyle and the colour too! Where did you find the picture?

George, what on earth would I do with a plait of my hair???

Elsie, I’m not going to colour it! Then I’d look like all the other asians who dye their hair brown! ;. I found the pic her.

Someone I knew at work once sold her hair. She was spotted in Hobart by a wig-maker on holiday from Sydney. I think she sold it for $1000, but she said that the guy wanted it because it was natural blonde. Apparently the demand is for red and blonde hair and you can’t get as much for dark hair because there are plenty of women in third world countries who are willing to sell their hair, and generally have dark hair. You still might be able to sell it though, it might not be for as much money though.

cheers,
bron

Karen! That’s such a cool site! Seeing all those hairstyles makes me feel like a rock star in a guitar shop ^_^ (as opposed to a kid in a candy store).

But if you don’t dye your hair, then you’ll look like all those Asians who keep their hair black!! raspberry

Elsie, the thing is, we seem to be in the minority!

(actually, technically, I don’t really qualify either. need to change picture on blog….)

Oh I don’t know - a keepsake?  A momento to a former you?? Maybe I’m just a romantic shorter-haired person??  smile
