Internet@home: The continuing saga

Thursday, 12 February, 2009

Further to my last post about our internet trials, yesterday Ben told me that Silly Internet Company number 2 (which shall hereafter be referred to as SIC2) rejected our application for broadband. Why? Because they can only do it through a Telstra line.

“What???” I said. “But we used to be with SIC2 and we had Optus!”

“Yeah,” said Ben, “but our Optus connection was renting a Telstra line. Our line now is an Optus line.”

“But isn't it exactly the same stuff they're using for the line? How is it different? It's not like acrylic vs. steel strings, is it?”

*Ben shrugs. Karen's head explodes.*

Disconnecting our Optus connection means we will incur a fee of $185. However, no internet provider can work with us without a Telstra line. (??? That just sounds suspicious. Is this a case for the ACCC?)

We are now trying to get cable ...

Wow. Sounds as bad as us. The ADSL has only today been set up (or at least, will be once the package arrives at home today) and so its taken them a full month of kerfuffle to get installed.

It’s a long story of pain and woe.

But in the end, the particular company we used were happy to install our Telstra line for us however, so it was all done, as long as we were prepared to wait 20 business days…

Just don’t ask how many times we had to sign up for an ADSL account before they would give it to us.
