Just tidbits

Tuesday, 18 October, 2005

Today I spent the afternoon writing a review of Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence which I went to see on Sunday. You'll have to wait for it to go up on CHN to read it.

After work I went to Ikea and bought some light shades, photo frames, a curtain rod, some curtains, a lamp (but no bulb was included, grr ...) and a clothes rack. Our bedroom feels like less of an interrogation chamber with that naked bulb swinging above the bed.

Our final Greek exam for the year is on Friday and I wonder if I should be worried or studying harder than I am. Everyone seems to think that I'll have no trouble doing well given my past track record of walking out of exams early. That may be so but I haven't learnt a thing since the half-yearly. I taught myself third declension nouns just last week and third declension adjectives this morning. I reckon I know most of the vocabulary but the finer details on subjunctives, infinites and participles need tuning and I have only got two days to catch up on half a year's work.

“But you only need to pass,” points out my lovely husband. So true.

All right, time for bed!

to be honest, while it’s true that you only need to pass, the question you need to ask yourself is - what will I do with my greek?

even cramming has value. it is actually untrue that you can’t cram languages (it’s hard, but not impossible).

if you ever hope to continue using greek, the challenge is really to absorb and learn as much as possible of both grammar and vocab. i am pretty right to sit down and read straight from the NT, depending on the unknown vocab of some passages, but there are fellow second years who will take an hour to puzzle out a few verses.

so i guess what i’m saying is, if you ever hope to keep using greek with any level of ease, more pain now is better than a slow death later.
