I decided to make some scarves for Operation Christmas Child and so have spent the last month or two knitting. Using this basic scarf pattern, I managed to knit five which I ironed flat last Friday to put into the shoeboxes since they need to go soon. I've now turned my energies to trying to knit a bag but I'm sort of making it up as I go along; I've taken the basic scarf pattern but I've swapped garter stitch for seed stitch which I think looks quite pretty. I'm using 3mm needles (I think they're 3mm—I inherited them from my aunt whose eyes are so bad she can't knit anymore and she had a whole bag full of needles of all different kinds) and 5 ply wool in this light lavender colour. I have this vague idea that I'll knit it like a scarf until it's long enough to be doubled, stitched up along the sides with a zipper to keep the thing closed. And then I'll make a handle and sew that on too.
(You can tell I'm a real beginner, can't you!)
The reason why I want to make bags is that often the children don't have anything to carry their new gifts so they always advise you to include a bag with your shoebox. Problem is, bags aren't cheap and there aren't very many that are suitable for kids to carry around but small enough to fit in a shoebox. I was thinking next year I could make a stack.
While surfing the web today, I came across a stack of really cool bag patterns which I wish I could make but I think I need someone to explain them to me:

Gosh, they are nice bags. I like the Sophie one. And the hat. I’d like to learn how to use circular needles.
These little cup holders look pretty nifty too.
Eek, 3mm needles! I’m using 7mm, 8mm and 12mm ones!
Actually, those cup holders might make neat wee Christmas presents…
You’d spill coffee all over them.
Naah, I don’t reckon.
Ooh…Loretta’s into knitting as well…I wish I could knit too! I wish I could sew…hope you make lots of beautiful things =)
I can teach you, Elsie.
