Lots of LOTR

Friday, 14 January, 2005

Yesterday Lizz (my sister-in-law) and I went to see the Lord of the Rings exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum. We caught the train to Central and walked, getting there at 9:30 which was half an hour after our session began so we would miss the rush. There were a good number of people there—enough so that you had to wait a little to see each part of the exhibit but not too many that it became frustrating. The display was certainly impressive—costumes from all the major characters (Galadriel's gown being the most gorgeous), weaponry (I loved the Elven lines the most), armour, models (including the imposing Orthanc), a very realistic-looking Boromir in his funeral vessel (made out of silicone), video bits (most of them taken from the extended editions of the films), drawings and colour studies by the concept designers (ooh, Alan Lee!) and bits of trivia in the exhibition text.

Lizz and I decided to take the plunge and get our photos done, hobbit-sized:

Hobbit-sized Karen and Gandalf-sized Lizz in Gandalf's cart

Even though that cost $15, I thought it was worth it to get a funny picture of me and my sister-in-law and it was really the best souvenir of the exhibition as the shop was quite disappointing (it stocked LOTR books, games, posters, figurines, jewellery [the One ring which now everyone wears, thus showing they've kind of missed the point of the story]), very tacky costumes, masks, etc. but no exhibition book and no postcards).

For some reason, you look a bit small to be a hobbit in that photo, but it’s cute nonetheless.

Thanks Ben! Yes, I’m a bit lacking in the curly hair/big hairy feet department. Who ever heard of an Asian hobbit anyway??
