Love the blue sky

Sunday, 14 January, 2007

Terrific night last night—we gorged ourselves on a feast of Japanese food at Sakae, then rocked up to the Metro. I bought Ben a band T-shirt and he decided to purchase a physical copy of Powder Burns (on his list, it ranks at #2 behind OK Computer).

Bluebottle Kiss was the support act and they were okay. There were some songs I rather liked and other songs that were rather ordinary. Only 50 or so people were there for the support act—it felt rather empty and we were able to get a rather good spot behind the first rail in the bit with the steps back from the dance floor.

By the time the Twilight Singers came onstage, the room filled up to about 300-350. There were kids who looked like they had just turned 18. There were a number of baby goths. There were people our age. There were people old enough to be our parents.

Greg Dulli played guitar for most of the evening but every now and then he traded places with his keyboard player. The whole band chainsmoked their way through the entire concert in total defiance of the “No smoking” signs (I'm still marvelling at how Greg managed to smoke and sing at the same time. Sometimes he'd be playing and he'd beckon one of the roadies to come light a cigarette and place it between his lips). People weren't moshing but it wasn't really moshing-type music. I thought everyone was really into it but I got the impression that the band were disappointed at their reception. Greg even quipped that Auckland was winning for best gig (but perhaps that was just a sly attempt to whip his audience into a frenzy). They played 19 songs straight, and then kept us hanging as we screamed and stamped for an encore. In the end, they didn't play “The Lure Would Prove Too Much” but they did play “There's Been an Accident” which is my second favourite Twilight Singers song.
