Microwave RIP

Tuesday, 07 October, 2003

Last night I went to make popcorn and the microwave blew a fuse and died. (Hmm, maybe it's trying to tell me something about my popcorn habit.) We were given that microwave by my father as a secondhand wedding present. It's survived three moves and my cooking. Rest in peace. (On the up side, our neighbours' kids found my USB thumb drive which I thought I'd lost for good.)

When I was in about grade 5 we once cooked some popcorn in the microwave in a plastic bowl that wasn’t microwave proof.  Funny stuff…but probably had to be there.

Gosh, Karen. How much popcorn do you eat?!

Not that much, really. A bag every now and then of that Uncle Toby’s microwave popcorn and then I usually try to share it with people.

The microwave didn’t blow up because of the popcorn; I put the bag in the microwave, pressed in 3 minutes, pressed the start button and then it died.

I don’t think its a habit if you share it. You’re okay!

Thats not a habit! this is a habit, just don’t use it to form a habit.

Stop at the Bus Stop !

Hmm, I don’t think I’ve managed to make Philip do anything!!

Maybe you need a popcorn machine! An airpopper for popcorn!

Its very easy to make popcorn without a Microwave, you get a pot, put some oil in it, bring up the temp for a while until the oil is hot. Use sunflower oil. Don’t burn the oil.
Put in the popcorn seeds, put on the lid, wait a little while, they pop, take it off the heat when you think most of them have popped.

But you can’t do that with the kernels of microwave popcorn, can you?

Maybe its hard to find popping popcorn kernels for sale these days, but my memory was from when I was a child doing it with Mum and old people like me have those experiences. Plus 10 plus years of cooking for myself and others. I feel bitter that all you have to do is put a bag full of corn and fat into a Microwave now.
I’ve gone to the trouble of looking it up for you. I think you can use butter in place, but you would have to try and see.

Materials
Popping corn, sauce pan and lid, 1/3 cup oil, stove, bowl, measuring cup.

Procedure
1.  Turn the stove on.
2.  Put the oil into the pan.
3.  Place the pan on the stove.
4.  Heat the oil until very hot (d0 not let the oil smoke)
5.  Test the oil by putting in a couple of corn kernels
(when they pop it is ready to add the rest of the corn)
6.  Add the rest of the corn and shake the pan so the oil spreads evenly.
When the popping begins to slow down take the pan away from the stove.  The heated oil will still pop the rest of the kernels, so be careful when you take the lid off.
7.  Pour the popcorn into a bowl.

This is from here.

Some things can and do go wrong:

1. Don’t keep them on the stove when they have mostly finished popping, its ok to have a few in the bottom that havn’t popped, if you keep it on the stove they will burn and you get black burnt ones.
2. Don’t set fire to the oil, if you do - make sure you know how to put it out. Don’t put the pan under the tap, cover the pan with a damp cloth.
3. Don’t pour the left-over oil down the sink.

too much effort.
