MYC on the brain

Saturday, 10 July, 2004

It is nearly that time of year again—the time of year where we load up the car and drive across the whole of Sydney to Merroo Conference Centre for six (if you include Pre-MYC) days of intense Bible study and hangingout with other Christians. So I will be offline from Sunday to Friday inclusive. Hope you don't miss me too much. Pray for us, for John Woodhouse (principal of Moore Theological College) who will be speaking on the topic of justification by faith, and pray for the students, many of whom are coming for the first time. I had a weird dream a couple of nights ago that has a lot to do with MYC though it wasn't obvious to me at the time. I dreamt that Ben and I went on holidays with Tim and Liz and it was the last day and we were packing and loading the cars. But there was mess everywhere—especially in the kitchen area where there were breadcrumbs all over the counters. The holiday house was one of those places where the main living area was downstairs and the front door was upstairs. Outside the front door, there were all these ECU people playing some sort of sardines/hide & seek game while Andrew looked on. I wanted to ask him about camping but it was a bit hard with this game going on. And then somehow we ended up in the car with Miriam driving and we were heading south to somewhere like Canberra and Miriam was telling us about this international student whose pet duck had died the night before and who was really upset about the whole thing (the duck could fly and had basically frozen to death up there in the clouds). I must have fallen asleep in the back seat because when I was woke up, we were on a steam boat and it was nearly time for staff meeting. Adam was dead and the students were really upset. Richard asked me to talk to the staff about the topic of “security”. I told him I hadn't prepared anything and he was all ready to get someone else to do it but I told him that I could do it—I just needed a bit of time. Mixed up in that dream there seems to be all sorts of confused thoughts about rest and holidays, ministry, MYC and second session mission. In real life, Tim and Liz had once suggested that we go away with them on holidays; Andrew had been appalled when he found out that I had never been camping; Adam had broken his leg at MYC last year falling off a roof; and “Security” is the theme for second session mission. (Glad I'm not speaking on it!)

I will save you the trouble. Camping is somewhat like hell on earth.

I’m not much of outdoorsy type, no.

Dear Karen

Your e-mail got bounced back, so I thought I’d try this. Here’s what I wrote:

Dear Karen

Hope you are having a lovely time on your birthday. To me it’s the 26th anniversary of becoming a mother—a very special event. It has been wonderful having you as my daughter.

We’re flying down to Adelaide tomorrow morning, and spending a few days in Barossa and Clare Valleys. I really need a break—it’s been a tough term.  I hope that a few days away will help me recharge my batteries.

See you on the 17th - I’ll let you know what we decide to do - eat in or out and if out, where.

(I ran into Christine and Peter Alexander the other night as I was going home. They asked about you. I think everyone here remembers you with fond memories.)

Love
