Nice Day

Thursday, 03 June, 2004

Today I had a nice day. I woke up after about 8 hours of sleep, ate breakfast, read my Bible, prayed for my family and Ben's family and then walked up to the hospital with Amanda where we met the other girls on ECU staff. We went inside to the chapel where we met one of the chaplains, a man named Ron who heads up the team of Anglicare chaplains in the Illawarra. He spent the morning talking to us about hospital chaplaincy—how to do it, what it is like, how we can do it too, etc. Afterwards we bought a birthday present for Bronwyn (who couldn't join us because her son was having a birthday party) and went to give blood at the blood bank. This was the 15th time I had given blood which kind of surprised me because I don't remember doing it 15 times. I'm O Positive which is normal for most Asians, according to Miriam. I don't know how she knows that. Miriam had trouble this time because they couldn't find a good vein. Amanda and I were fine, if not a little dizzy afterwards. Stacie felt quite faint so we all sat around for ages eating stuff in the blood bank before getting out of there and driving down to Unanderra to surprise Bronwyn at the party because it was actually her birthday too. Then Miriam drove to Uni, Miriam and Amanda hopped out and Stacie drove Miriam's car and dropped me home. I wasn't feeling heaps great so I lay in bed and read three chapters of Bishop Shelby Spong's Living in Sin? and some material that Liberty Christian Ministries had sent me about lesbianism. Miriam and Stacie came back with Amanda at 3 and Amanda picked up her car and drove away. Then Miriam, Stacie and I went shopping with the vague aim of seeing what sort of formal wear was available, keeping in mind the FEVA Black Tie dinner but not really seriously thinking about buying anything. I ended up spending quite a bit of money—I bought Stephen and Bethany their wedding present (which I subsequently forgot to take out of the boot of Miriam's car!), a pair of elbow-length black satin gloves (always wanted a pair of those!), some cotton jumpers and two pairs of pants from Rivers which were a mere $20 each! And we wandered from store to store, looking at clothes and occasionally trying something on. I haven't done that for ages—very girly thing to do and it's interesting to see the diversity in dress styles. I'm very fussy; I like a certain cut or style of clothes—no frills, clean lines, dark colours. Whereas Miriam kept exclaiming over lacy frilly patterned shirts and Stacie kept pulling out tops with low V-necklines. I had pumpkin soup for dinner and we watched a bit of Ben Folds Five—Sessions At West 54th Street and then Tim popped round to spend some time with Ben. Tomorrow the ECU staff team are driving to Sydney for an AFES AIM (Australian Institute of Ministry) day. I've never been to an AFES AIM day so I'm kind of excited and I hope I see Matt of Christians in the Media. Afterwards I have to go straight to Little Rach's to do more Bible study for Sleepover. I'm going to rest on Friday night so don't ring me. On Saturday I'm singing at the ordination service for a minister from Engadine Anglican and then driving to Sydney to have dinner with my mother and Peter. I'm staying the night but they have no blankets so I have to bring my own. Then on Sunday I'm having late brunch with Louise and her boyfriend, then catching the train back to Wollongong in time for Sunday school but I'm afraid it will all be a disaster because I haven't even thought about preparing for my Sunday school lesson yet aside from thinking that the Big Point of 1 Samuel 24:1-22 is that David feared God. Blah!

Busy busy busy.

I wish I could give blood; it seems like a Good Thing to Do, and they feed you such nice food afterwards.

Ooh! Elbow-length gloves!

Why can’t you give blood, Ben?

I have mutant red blood cells that would not be good for anyone with healthy blood!

I’ve given blood about four or five times, but my last time was too traumatic, so I’ve never gone back!! That’s pretty wussy…
