So we had our
Non-Christmas concert last night at St. Michael's. It poured rain on and off throughout the evening and it was much colder than it should have been for a November evening. Despite this, around 45 people showed up, coming into the hall to be confronted with a dark room, a long snake of blue tinsel and stars, and Miriam sitting in a leather armchair near the door with a terracotta bowl candle in her hand. Upon paying the entrance fee, guests pulled back the white curtain and slipped through the second entrance into the inner room which was decorated with artworks by some of our visual arts/graphic design students and tables bearing more candles from my extensive candle collection.
(NB: I do
not collect candles; that last part was supposedto be sarcastic. People keep giving me candles but I'm not actually that into them. Nevertheless, because of the plethora of candles in my possession, some are given the wrong impression ...)
Scott was MC-ing the evening and he did a brilliant job, leading the audience in a spirited rendition of “The Ladies of the Harem of the Court of King Caracticus” by Rolf Harris. Astrid, who had only practised with Jono, Simon and Pakman 15 minutes before the concert started, sang blues. Kere,
Little Rach and I read short stories that we regarded as being rather depressing but they were well-received; Charissa gave us a wonderful rendition of
Syrex by Debussy; Simon played three songs, including one about Noah;
Ben made everyone do a stress test and Pakman got the higest score and is therefore the most stressed; Pakman gave us a drum solo (he said he was going to sing a song about serenity but changed his mind after he did the stress test);
Julie and Miriam were very brave and got up and played, despite the fact that Julie had only been playing guitar for a week and Miriam had only been playing the vegetable instrument for about 20 minutes; Julie also got interviewed with Naomi about their artwork; Ben played some of his songs and I sang (and was quite flat in parts, unfortunately!!); and Pakman, Simon and Jono finished it all off. Oh, and Kerryn and Rach and others provided us with a very yummy supper of cake, muffins and ice cream.
All in all an extremely enjoyable evening and we raised a grand total of $328 for
AFES!
