One post before I sleep

Monday, 02 June, 2003

Had a very busy weekend. Had an MTS couple and one mystery guest over for dinner on Friday and we watched Minority Report on DVD. Saturday we had breakfast with friends at Cronulla and went to our writing meeting at 10:30. Had lunch at a Thai restaurant with people from the writing meeting and then went to Haoran's house and had a mini writing meeting sitting in the sun. Got excited about writing and doing Hippocampus Extensions again and there are a couple of changes in store which I don't have time to talk about here. We left Haoran's at about 4:30 and went to Duncan's place and hung out there for a while but we were all very tired so didn't talk much. Ben and I went to my mother's for dinner and Peter made curry—a lot of which we took home with us. Very thankful that we did not crash on the way back to Wollongong since we were driving Irwan's car (gave Shamgar back to Vlad to have the air conditioning re-gassed and the suspension fixed up). Sunday we went to Miriam's for lunch and brought two mystery guests. I highly recommend the mystery guest thing; it's fun. What you do is you invite someone over for a meal and ask them to bring a mystery guest. If you are the one who has been invited, you then tell your mystery guest of choice that you are taking them out to a mystery breakfast/lunch/dinner at a mystery location. It's heaps good if your mystery guest does not know your mystery host because then they get a good opportunity to get to know one another. That's kind of scary for some people so be careful about who you choose. Still, if it's just an intimate meal of three or four, it's not that scary. Anyways, lunch was good and I got to show them the children's talk I've been working on for TEAM. They gave me good feedback. Had High Five's in the afternoon which went well though it was very messy (we were doing Genesis 25 and 26 and drawing bowls on cardboard and glueing lentils to them because it's the story where Esau exchanges his birthright for a bowl of lentil stew). Church was on Colossians 1:18-2:5. Our Bible Study group did a mission spot on the persecuted church. We dressed in black, wore sunglasses and stormed into the church with super-soakers, threatening the parishioners that we would kill them if they moved. Then we told them about the persecuted church and different stuff that was happening around the world and got them to pray in groups. We also coordinated the corporate prayer thing. It's the first time I've ever prayed up the front at church and I think it went well. After supper supper was in the hall and we decided to stay and have pizza with the others even though it was late and we were tired. Ben got roped into a game called Carcassone by Dave and some others and I had to wheedle him out of it. Today was my first day at work and I was so anxious about it I kept waking up before the alarm went off. I kept waking up from about 5 am onwards which was very annoying. Wrist hurts because I got hit with a soccer ball yesterday after Sunday School. Should have put ice on it but the church had none so it still hurts and it's quite painful to brush my teeth. Shouldn't have been so anxious about work—everybody is really nice, I like my supervisor and I had no major dramas today. Nothing I couldn't handle. Am still trying to get my head around the email thing; the University of Wollongong is switching to a funny IMAP system that I don't know how to set up on Eudora. They are basically forcing everyone to use Outlook. I wonder how the other academics in the Arts Faculty feel about that. Had lunch with Bec and ate leftover curry from Saturday. Afternoon passed slowly while I wrestled with my computer and tried to install a higher version of Netscape because they're still using Communicator 4.77. Don't know how I'm going to do the web design part of the job; they want me to learn Dreamweaver because Dreamweaver has templates. I told them that CSS could do everything they wanted but I don't think they quite believe me. Still, it would be good to expand my skills and learn Dreamweaver, even if it does produce absolutely appalling code. Apparently all the training courses for staff are free. Yay! After work, went to TEAM and did my children's talk and it went down quite well. There was very little that the others in the group felt could be improved upon or changed. I might put it up on this website one day when I don't feel so dead. Had leftover pumpkin soup from Friday for dinner and spent the entire evening on the internet, checking my mail, reading my blogroll and typing up minutes from Saturday's writing meeting. Feel a bit more on top of things except I've totally neglected the ironing—oh dear! Tomorrow is another day as they say. Yes, yes it is.

That’s an awfully busy few days, especially with the added stress of a new job.  Have prayed for you that you will settle quickly into the job.

Can I say something else from someone whose life has also been too hectic sometimes.  Take time to stop and smell the roses.  I find I need quiet time with just me and God more than ever at times like that.  I don’t mean the obligatory, compulsory, evangelical QT which of course I am sure you have at 4:30 am every morning - just like every one of the rest of us.  OOOPS, sarcasm shows again.
Shalom,
Jan

A friend of mine who knew that (at the time) my life was too stressed gave me a far side card (the one with the old, wise cow saying to the young cow “as you travel life’s path, don’t forget to stop and eat the roses) and a mug with a big painting of a cow on it (one of those glebe markets things) as a 21st present.

Six years later, I still have the mug; it’s one of my favourite presents.

This is just a random google thing, but http://www.uic.edu/depts/accc/software/eudora/eudora.win.imap.html might help with the IMAP / Eudora thing… I’m not a power user of Eudora or IMAP :(

Dreamweaver is okay, Karen. Honest.

Why do you iron? We have a household of eight and an item is ironed once a month, perhaps.

Why do I iron? Good question. I ask myself a lot sometimes ... especially when I’m ironing. When Ben and I were working full-time, I ironed so that we had clothes that looked nice for when we went to work. Ben used to wear a lot of collared short-sleeved shirts and nice shorts/pants and they would take the longest.

Now that Ben’s now doing MTS, his daily wardrobe is more casual but I still iron his pants and the occasional collared shirt that he feels like wearing. I don’t bother with jeans and T-shirts. And now that I’m back to working again, I’m back to ironing things for work!

Jan: Noted about the roses.

Dave:: That sounds like an awesome present!

Alan: All right, I’ll break down my prejudices against Dreamweaver and book myself in for training right now ...

Dreamweaver can be good:
