So, how did it go? Well, thank you! I spent a bit more time rehearsing in one corner of the Chaplaincy, much to the rest of the staff's amusement (the ones who were around, anyway). They all wished me well and said that they'd prayed for me. I was sipping hot water for my throat which was starting to go the way of all bugs and flus (Ben woke up that morning with a full-blown bug but decided to come in to Uni anyway). I rehearsed it in front of Amanda in the actual room which was helpful because then I could visualise a little more what it would be like. Met with Marina for about 45 mins, talking about everything else BUT the talk. Then afternoon tea started—lots of yummy food—a fair number of girls milling around and chatting but not heaps—and then we piled into the room for the formal part of the afternoon which included a reading of part of Bridget James's Diary, Julie's testimony, a Bible reading, a short interview with me and then my talk. Still wasn't nervous—just got up and did it. Stumbled a few times but fixed myself up. Also got a giggling fit because Janet in the front was laughing but quickly recovered my composure. Think I carried my audience's attention all the way through the twenty minutes. At the end we had a question time. Took a little while get warmed up. In the end, most of the girls who asked questions were Christians and people I knew. Had a couple of curly ones and certainly had ones that I had to think hard about (thinking hard on the spot is an interesting activity; I think it's a skill I'd like to develop) but afterwards members of the girls' staff team told me that they thought I had answered well and sensitively, even though one of the questions asked was particularly unsensitive to any unbelievers in the room. Not that there were many unbelievers in the room. There was at least one ... possibly two. The one I knew about responded positively and said she understood more about beauty from a Christian perspective but didn't say much else. I think she's already meeting up with someone to read the Bible so that's good. The rest of the feedback from the comment slips was mostly positive—though the two girls from Trinidad and Tobago said that they wanted to hear a more in-depth exploration of the topic (perhaps they didn't realise that it was an evangelistic thing). Maybe I might do that in the future. Anyways, I am hoping to write up my talk as an article but have no idea when I'll get around to doing that. Spent most of Friday sleeping, trying to shake the bug. Finished reading Watchmen. Made shepherd's pie with grilled vegetables, grape tomatoes and Yorkshire pudding for dinner and watched U-571 which was all right as far as war movies go; really, I only wanted to watch it because of Cryptonomicon to increase my knowledge about U-boats. Saturday was our writing day (excellent stuff, good attendance, fun time!) Sunday it poured and our bedroom started to leak. Ben was up on the roof clearing the gutter but we're pretty sure that the water's not coming from the gutter because it wasn't overflowing. Had to go shopping for various bits and pieces—ended up making a few frivolous purchases from K-Mart because they were cheap: Centre Stage (to which Ben rolled his eyes) and The Animatrix for $16 each. Not bad! Spent the rest of the day doing my Sunday lesson, which I was still doing when I went to music practice for Fi's wedding in the afternoon. Sunday school went well; boys actually answered the revision questions once they had the incentive of chocolates and warheads. We had a evening church barbecue indoors because it was still raining, then church where Shaun wrapped up his series on Abraham (a series which I really really enjoyed). Then I had choir practice for the Good Friday service, then I begged to go home however kept getting caught up talking to people in the hall over supper. Two of my Sunday school leaders are quitting as of next term so that reduces the team from four to two. Aaargh! Not thinking about it. Felt depressed because I had to go home after church and design two posters for mission week so went home and did that and did not think about Sunday school (though Shaun very kindly said, “Don't worry, Karen, we won't leave you and Rowan to teach all those kids alone. We'll work something out”) Woke up at 5 am to the sound of the drip drip dripping leaking into our bedroom—falling into basins and buckets strategically placed on the floor. Blah; can't wait to get to Easter!

Sounds like it went pretty well, all things considered.

I want to snag The Animatrix for $16, too.

Glad the talk went well - was getting nervous for you, reading the posts. Are you going to put the talk itself up? I’d be really interested to read it.

Re U-571 it is grossly historically inaccurate. There were no Americans involved. In fact, the real heros were the British, Canadian (and Aussie) sailors, and it took place in 1941, before Pearl Harbour.

Good to know, Kathleen! I am shockingly ignorant about WWII.

Might see if I can put up the talk this weekend ...

Please bear in mind that it is an evangelistic talk and doesn’t delve too deeply into the subject matter though!
