Rebecca St James in concert

Sunday, 23 February, 2003

Went to see Rebecca St. James in concert last night at Dayspring Christian Fellowship at Castle Hill. The last time I heard her sing live was five years ago when she had just finished Pray so I was really looking forward to it. Duncan got tickets for me, Ben, Tim, Ros and Liz and my parents-in-law generously offered to drive us there and back while they went to dinner with friends.

Surprisingly, quite a few people we knew were there too. The place was packed! Rebecca's support acts were Charmaine and The Matt Magee Band. Charmaine also did back-up vocals for Rebecca when she did her set.

Here are some photos I took of the concert: Sorry they're not heaps good; our digital camera doesn't do closeups or night photography very well and we couldn't stick around for the signing afterwards so I couldn't get a picture with her like I would have liked to.

Songs she sang included (in no particular order):

  • God
  • You're the Voice
  • Go and Sin No More
  • Wait for Me
  • Let My Words Be Few
  • Song of Love
  • Breathe
  • Lamb of God
  • Quiet You With My Love
  • It is Well
  • You
  • Our God is an Awesome God

I liked that part of her concert was a worship section and that she frequently got the audience to sing along with her, removing her microphone so that we could hear each other. Some of the people I was with complained that she talked to much but I liked the breaks in between the music and I was also grateful for the chance to sit down. Perhaps she could have explained the gospel a lot more clearly (at least she didn't forget the resurrection!) and perhaps she could have said something about singleness being a path that God may want his followers to take (remember that she wrote “Wait for Me” for her future husband and she's heavily into promoting True Love Waits) but it was wonderful to see her trying to glorify God through what she was doing.

Looking forward to the next time she returns ...
