Saturday I felt so down that I skipped going to the church carnival (though I did bring them a cake) and went to the city instead. The trains were out so I caught the bus which made the journey so much longer. It was hot and muggy, and of course Lincraft didn't have quite what I wanted. (It never does ... now I understand why some knitters dye and spin their own yarn.) I spent a lot of money on CDs so I suppose now Guan has all the more reason to mock me because I got Lindsay Lohan's second album for $10.
I caught the bus home, and Ben and I drove out for counselling together. Straight after counselling, we drove to Guan's but we arrived late and missed Guan being surprised by birthday guests at his house, and we came in halfway through a game of Puerto Rico (the players were calling this particular set “San Guan” after the birthday boy). I didn't 100% understand how the game was played (Mary, my partner, would say things like, “How about we get the Trader and load the ships up with sugar, indigo and corn, and then we'll get some more victory points but we're short of money so we should probably get the Prospector next go so we can get some more dubloons and then next time the Builder is played, we can buy a Customs House” and I'd go, “Okay, sounds good.”) But we had fun anyway. (And Ben got to buy the fortress he had been coveting.)

Dinner was at Red Hat in the upper room, with more birthday surprises for Guan. We had a westernized Chinese banquet and Mary had given us all Kinder Surprises (which were promptly opened so we could see all the little toys inside).

Ben S was not so keen on his Doraemon and I wasn't so keen on my two-headed monster so we swapped.

My Ben, however, was extremely happy with his knight and fort, and somewhat appropriately one of the latecomers got a dragon who fought the knight and ended up chasing him away.

Afterwards we went to the Tea Inn for crazy Asian drinks.
