The way I feel about flowers

Monday, 08 November, 2004

I like flowers ... ... in that I love the way the flowers look. Especially ones with bright vivid colours. My favourite flowers are irises (the bluer the better), oriental lilies and dark red roses. I'm not acquainted enough with the tulip to be obsessed with it; perhaps the excesses at Bowral turned me off them. I don't care for carnations at all (too flimsy and pathetic). I'm definitely not enthusiastic about orchids. But I'm not too thrilled about getting flowers ... ... mainly because flowers wither and fade and, though they may grace your dining room table for a few short days, after this you have to watch them die. (NB: Getting potted plants does not solve this problem either, given the absence of green thumb on my hands.) I like digital flowers because they give you such detail you wouldn't normally see with the human eye, the colours are often better than reality and they don't spoil or fade. I may really be saying that I prefer photographs of flowers to actual flowers but what I am really saying in my opinion is that flowers remind me of the imperfection of this world and how the decay of sin permeates even creation; flowers in the new heaven and the new earth will be marvellous things, methinks.

Sakura - cherry blossoms - are my favourite because they’re pink, Asian and it seems to be a recurring theme in the songs of my favourite band =)

I am afraid that I cannot relate to that last sentiment; I am almost permanenty astonished at the beauty inherent in creation all around. So many beautiful things to enjoy.

My last statement has to be seen in the light of my first statement though. I do like flowers, just not getting them.

Yes, but you say you look at flowers and are reminded of decay and sin, instead of the glory of creation and all the good beautiful things that are in the world because of the character of the God who made it and entrusted us with it.

... and I think you can still get that joy from looking at cut ones, with the added pleasure of knowing that someone who loves you gave you them.

Or maybe I just want someone to give me flowers *sniff*.

Good point—I should clarify my last statement and say that I only think of decay and sin if I am given flowers.
