Top 10 Classical

Thursday, 08 July, 2004

I decided to lump together all sorts of stuff under the vague heading of “classical”. It includes opera, ballets, oratorios, symphonies, etc. Hope you guys don't mind. Not sure if I can get to 10 in this list but I'll try. I also can't be bothered noting down my favourite recordings of these pieces so you'll just have to live without. Same deal about the order as previous posts.

  1. Carmina Burana (Carl Orff)
  2. Cinderella (Sergey Prokofiev)
  3. Quarto libro dei madrigali (Claudio Monteverdi)
  4. La Traviata (Giuseppe Verdi)
  5. Chants d'Auvergne (Joseph Canteloube)
  6. La Mer (Claude Debussy)
  7. Bolero (Maurice Ravel)
  8. Symphony 2: Resurrection (Gustav Mahler)
  9. Swan Lake (Piotr Tchaikovsky)
  10. Requiem (Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart)

Hmm, that was easier than I expected. I feel a bit bad about leaving out Beethoven's Symphony 6: Pastorale and I was sorely tempted to put in The Marriage of Figaro and Concerto for Flute and Harp in C by Mozart but anyway ...

Maybe that's another list I could do one day—Top 10 CDs to fall asleep to.

I believe that Mozart’s Requiem is that playing in the last scene in Elizabeth (with Cate Blanchett, directed by Shekhar Kapur). It’s rather lush and powerful indeed.
