Unwinding

Tuesday, 13 April, 2004

Friday night I was supposed to sing at IBM but Pam turned up instead so I gratefully went home (all tired out from having to cook red curry with chicken and mixed veggies and Thai beef salad; IBM dinners are fun but exhausting). I came back to pick up Ben and met a guy from Japan who isn't a Christian but has been coming along to IBM faithfully ever since the end of last year. Sadly, he is moving to Melbourne in a week's time but he did say he intended to keep on studying the Bible. I slept in for an awfully long time on Saturday—then got up, jumped in the shower, had brunch and made popcorn before wheedling Ben into taking me to Uni for anime club. I've always been meaning to go to anime club; I signed up at the beginning of the year but something always came up whenever it was on, or I just didn't feel like it. This time I took the plunge and went, expecting to walk into a room full of strangers. But I saw a couple of people I knew through other people and then Kelly showed up and sat with me. All the stuff we watched I'd never seen before—episodes of Photon (not recommended—it looked really stupid), DNA2 (funny even though the premise is extremely lame), Now and Then, Here and There (everyone told me it was depressing so it's a good thing I saw the last episode and therefore don't have to worry about how it ends), Bubblegum Crisis (again, the last episode) and Love Hina (which, despite being quite silly, was very amusing; subsequently I hired out two DVDs of it for the rest of the long weekend). I left at 4 even though screenings finish at 5; I didn't think I could last that long and besides I had other stuff to do (boring stuff like typing up minutes, checking/ignoring my email, etc.) Ben was still writing his talks for IBM camp on Sunday and Monday. I had asked him if he wanted me to pack for him and he said no, but then Saturday night was passing very quickly and he was still writing/agonising over his talk so I finished the packing for him anyway. It was getting on to 11 o'clock and he still wasn't done and I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep with him still working (now that the computer is in our bedroom) so I started doing the laundry. We went to bed at around 12:30. In the morning I was going to drop Ben off at Horace's place because they were intending to take Horace's car to drive to Fitzroy Falls for IBM camp. But then Ben realised he would have a full car load and that Horace's car was probably a bit too small. So instead we did a swap and I got to drive Horace's car (which has no power steering but still wasn't as bad as OUL, the car I crashed). I spent the morning doing odd jobs and catching up on my blog reading but at 11 o'clock I started feeling sick so went back to bed with the Sandman (Haoran has generously lent me all of the Sandman library apart from Volume 1). I made myself get up at 3 to cook risotto, eat some dunch and go to church to meet Rowan to talk about Sunday school for next term. I think we're both feeling a bit daunted about having such a reduced team but Rowan's optimism offset my pessimism. We read part of the latter half of 1 Samuel aloud because we're moving onto David. I find those stories curious, strange and somewhat disturbing. There are some who say that God never causes us to sin and to some degree that is right, but then there are passages which talk about how the Lord sent an evil spirit to torment Saul (1 Samuel 16) and how that evil or harmful spirit from the Lord comes upon Saul at the time he hurls his spear intending to pin David to the wall (1 Samuel 18:10 and 1 Samuel 19:9-10). I know that God is sovereign and he can do what he likes because he is God; perhaps this is just another hard thing I have to swallow. I had band practice straight after that, then church, then supper in the hall. We had soup made from the leftover lamb bones from Passover (which I didn't go to because we were having dinner with my dad). I headed home at about 11 and stayed up watching more episodes of Love Hina because I didn't feel like sleeping. On Monday I slept in, finished The Sandman Vol. 2: The Doll's House, went online, cleaned the shower recess and thought about writing things for H/E 09 and other bits and pieces. I ended up scribbling down my thoughts on shopping (to be blogged about later when they're more coherent) and flicking through our entire collection of The Briefing for exegetical articles. I started cooking dinner but there was no sign of Ben. Just as I was starting to get really worried, he arrived home with Horace who took his car back. He said IBM camp went well—there was about 30 people there and the food was terrific. Everyone there had a “secret friend”—much like a secret Santa who was supposed to do something nice for you over the course of the weekend. However, the thing about international students is they don't always understand rules or instructions given in English, so one guy who was a secret friend for another guy got all these people to hold up placards during one of the meals and the last placard read, “From your secret friend, Joe!” (oops, not a secret anymore!!) This also meant that it took a full 10 minutes to explain really simple games to them. I showed Ben some episodes of Love Hina which he didn't find nearly as funny as I did and then I watched Ghost in the Shell before going to bed.

Hi karen,
You have an interesting way of unwinding (not!)

My little sister was obsessed with Neon Genesis Evangelion for a couple of months. Enjoyable, but rather intense.
