Viral affections

I wake myself up by coughing and then roll over and try to go back to sleep. The sore throat is just a ghost but an irritating one at that. My head feels like someone has taken my brain and sloshed it around inside my skull. I feel dizzy—as if someone has shifted the world one foot to the left. Yesterday we drove to Sydney for a wedding and an engagement party. Miriam came too because she didn't want to drive and the wedding was for a common friend. I'm sure that, by the end of the evening, she was wishing she had brought her own car. But the morning started off well. We found a prime parking spot on Lang Rd and walked to the markets looking for presents. I had three to buy. Miriam needed to buy a nice skirt for an upcoming wedding (she is facing a month full of weddings; there are more weddings than weekends). It was great fun to wander around the markets, looking at various things, poking through the clothes racks, and so on. In the end Ben picked out a funny plant for his friend's engagement (I don't remember the name of the plant—only that it ended in “Schwartzkopf”) and I got a lovely journal cover for my friend Anita (now I want one too!) and a bag for my friend Melinda. Oh, and Miriam found a wonderful skirt for $15. We had lunch in the markets, eating Thai noodles and sitting on one of those benches against a wall. We walked back to the car and got out the wedding present (purchased in Berrima and paid for by the three of us) and headed off to the wedding. Tammie and Kenny's wedding was being held at St. Matthias' Centennial Park. Every guest had to sign their name in the visitors' book as they came in the door. We were also given wedding chocolates. As a result, it took half an hour to fill the church but I suspect that that had been pre-planned. The bridal party looked very handsome and she walked down the aisle to a real live choir who also performed during the signing of the register and the recessional. I had a massive coughing fit right in the middle of the prayers but no one minded too much (I hope). Afterwards there was afternoon tea in the hall and I caught up with all these people from school and some other unexpected people who Tammie knew through some connection or other. There were photos in the dying afternoon sun and then the bride and groom were off. Some of my friends and I went to a cafe to have coffee and a chat since we weren't invited to the reception. And then we said goodbye and got stuck in traffic on our way to the Shire. I fell asleep in the car while Ben went to visit his grandmother and then we drove to the engagement party venue. The party was full of Ben's friends from school and their respective partners. The couple whose engagement we were celebrating had been going out for nine years and at last were going to get married. It was lovely to see their families get behind them and show their support. The time was getting later and later. I was worried our car would be locked in the multi-storey we had parked it in (it wasn't). Miriam had been invited to Tammie and Kenny's wedding reception but she had agreed to meet us here later so that we could all go back to Wollongong together. However, her ride back from the reception ended up taking many detours, dropping off various family members and getting lost in the city, so, as a result, Miriam didn't show up until 1. We were all pretty tired and cranky by the time we got home but at least we got home.
