Welcome to the world of RSS

Thursday, 08 January, 2004

I'm being adventurous and am trying to install that free RSS reader that Philip told me about on my computer. I'm not sure if there's much point since, out of my blogroll, only Ben, Ben A, Jan, Neil Gaiman, Opinionated, Pete, Philip, Rachel and Tim have got the feed. That's only 9 out of 21 blogs. (NB: If you are using Blogger and are interested in how to get a free RSS feed for your blog, read this article.) Hmm, this might result in RSS-discrimination ... surely not. We'll see how things go; maybe the reader will be a useful tool. In other news, I've discovered that Joyce has a blog. We know Joyce because she's a FBE student and Ben used to work at FBE. I think she and I were in the same small group at Mid Year Conference 2001 but my memory could be faulty on that one. Considered yourself added to the blogroll, Joyce!

As an RSS reader, instead of a client side program, you might consider a server-side solution like Feed on Feeds (http://minutillo.com/steve/feedonfeeds/).  Requires PHP/MySQL, but means you have your blog list and read/unread items wherever you have the net.

I wouldn’t even know where to start. What do I do to get the feed?

Sorry, I hope your not having trouble with that RSS reader - there are a lot more - There is this one which is good http://www.awasu.com/

You might have to ask Ben A about that one because he’s got it. Might be something you have to pay for on Upsaid, though :(.

Philip, my main problem was trying to install the Windows Update. That took FOREVER ...

So what’s the address for your rss feed? The one for your journal, I mean. Then I could add you to my friends page on livejournal. smile

Never mind, I got it working. smile

My RSS feed is/was completely hand-coded. Yes, I am certifiably insane, because every update means rewriting the XML file. Upsaid is also set up so that free account people can’t have external RSS feed generators like Blogmatrix.

I have stopped updating my RSS feed because I will shortly be moving to yourweb for hosting. How are you generating your feed, Karen?
