What is the difference between homework and housework?

Saturday, 14 August, 2004

I think we slept for around 12 hours. After a certain period of time, I think my body refuses to sleep anymore so I have to get up and do something. Today it was clean the bathroom (believe me, it needed it). And I don't just mean the shower recess—the whole thing: bathtub, vanity, mirror, floor tiles and so on. I shouldn't mention the last time it was cleaned like this; you'd never want to come over if you knew. Housework is not my speciality and occurs in short bursts a long way apart. (Hey, I know I'm not the perfect 1950s housewife.) But now the laundry's done, the ironing's done, I made risotto for dinner and I'm ignoring the dust that's covering our piano. For another day. Maybe.

I think cleaning the bathroom is the one thing I’m not looking forward to next year. Good on you for doing it when you were sick!

Housework is not my specialty either—man, what an understatement! I remember once telling my mom that I wanted to be a homemaker and she said I would have the most messy house ever. (Yes I have very encouraging supportive parents *rolls eyes*) So when I moved in with 5 other friends early last year I proposed a $50 fine for neglecting the weekly house chores. I knew I’d need that kind of motivation to get me going. They agreed. I have paid up quite a few times… more than any one of them!

Where does the $50 fine go?

I love housework; it’s a kind of mediation.

I like putting things in order, and chucking things out but I often find it overwhelming and I give up half way and leave it for another day.

I need space to be organised!!

My motto when cleaning:

When in doubt, chuck it out.

The $50 fine goes to the house fund, which is used for replacing fused light bulbs, purchasing floor detergent, paying the newspaper delivery boy, etc.
