Why studying New Testament Greek is not like studying any other language

- There's a fixed vocab list which means you don't have to learn every single possible word from the ancient world;
- You don't need to learn to say, “My name is ...” or “Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?”;
- Because you're reading/studying the Bible, it's actually interesting and relevant (certainly more than knowing where Sesame Street is);
- New Testament Greek isn't a spoken language so there are no aural and oral tests. This, however, also means that you cannot go to a foreign country on exchange to get practice;
- Reading Mark's gospel to each other in Greek makes me feel like we're doing Colossians 3:16 in some way;
- The main task is translation, not composition; very rarely will I ever be asked to write something in Greek.
